Every year the Sudbury Catholic District School Board Trustees select recipients for the Board’s prestigious Chairperson’s Award. These individuals demonstrate the Board’s mission and vision each and every day and positively contribute to the lives of all staff and students. The three nominees this year are strong examples of dedicated individuals who fully embrace the Catholic values that the Board espouses.
Gaston Theriault is a co-operative education teacher at Bishop Alexander Carter Catholic Secondary School who actively supports each of his students in a variety of ways. Gaston is described as caring teacher who values service, humility and care. He works each day to help students reach their individual future goals. Paying special attention to students’ needs, interests and specific abilities, Gaston has helped the Ontario Youth Apprentice Program (OYAP) at Bishop Alexander Carter grow, providing a positive experience for all. Gaston’s passion for experiential learning and belief in his students and their abilities has made a tremendous difference for many.
Claire Morrison is employed at St. Charles College. In her role as Office Supervisor, Claire is regarded as a caring and nurturing member of the school community. Constantly showing compassion to staff and students alike, Claire has shown remarkable passion for her work through her many volunteer roles. Claire is often the first person to volunteer to organize a school event, open house or breakfast fundraiser. Claire actively contributes to St. Charles and the School Board each day, showcasing invaluable work ethic in each task.
Brenda Thompson is a Guidance Counsellor at Marymount Academy. Often described as a role model for staff and students, Brenda embodies faith in all aspects of her life. Known as an encouraging voice for all students, she has consistently sought new opportunities to further their education. Brenda has championed the Advanced Placement (AP) program at Marymount, which has proved to be very beneficial for students who wish to earn University credits. She is also the lead of the annual Christmas Food Drive which occurs at the Holy Redeemer Church. Brenda also encourages students to help the community whenever they can, often partnering with nonprofit organizations such as ACCESS AIDS to provide support.
“We are very proud of the three nominees of this year’s award,” said Michael Bellmore, Chair of the Board of Trustees at the Sudbury Catholic District School Board. “Each individual is a clear role model for not only their school, but for the Sudbury Catholic District School Board as a whole. They represent what the Board strives to achieve each day.”
